About Town Hvar (optional Palmižana)

The town Hvar is on the Island Hvar, Croatia’s longest and sunniest island, with 2.722 hours of sunlight annually. The name derives from the Greek name Pharos (lighthouse), the ancient name for the whole island and the town of Stari Grad. When Slavic tribes arrived on the island, they couldn’t pronounce Pharos, so they changed the name to Hvar.

The town Hvar only became an actual town in 1278, when the Venetians (during a brief period of occupation) encouraged people from Pharos (present-day Stari Grad) to relocate around this southwest facing the bay, which they considered a more suitable center, as it could be better defended in the event of an attack. In 1420, the town Hvar came under Venice for a second time and rapidly became one of the wealthiest centers in Dalmatia. The Venetians used it as the port of call for trade ships traveling to and from the Orient and set up their Adriatic fleet headquarters here.

Sv. Klement - palmižana
Vinogradišće bay – Palmižana beach

Palmižana is one of the most famous tourist resorts in Hvar, Croatia, and a nautical marina. It is located on the St. Klement island’s southern side and encircled by a dense pine tree forest, with plants such as rosemary and heather, among other exotic plants. St. Klement is the largest of the Paklinski Islands archipelago next to island Hvar. The bay of Vinogradišće on the island’s southern side is home to Palmižana beach, which is partly pebble and sandy. It is exciting to families with children and has a top gastronomic offer of nearby restaurants that attracts other guest structures.

A lovely trip today from Bol to Hvar. Super new boat and they provided a little snack on the way over, then a handy A6 size sheet giving sights of Hvar. All departures are on time. And a little snifter of brandy on the return run. Definitely five stars!

  3. Ha Pe (verified customer)

Excellent Trip with this tour company. Very friendly and customer-oriented. Small traditional snacks for free. The prices for beverages are fair, too.
Hvar is a very nice Island, and Hvar City is worth a visit.
